Hertzsprung-Russell diagram

1. Why is the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram important to astronomy?

Answer: It shows the relationship and differences between stars and classifies them based on several qualities. It helps astronomers better understand the life cycle of stars.

2. What are the two qualities of a star does the HR diagram measure, and how does the diagram does this?

Answer: The HR diagram measures a star's luminosity and/or absolute magnitude and its temperature. Each star is a dot on the graph, and their position is plotted based on its temperature and absolute magnitude. The hotter stars are on the left and the labels on the graph depends on the textbook you're using.

3.Where on the graph can our sun be found?

Answer:The Sun is found on the main sequence at luminosity 1 (absolute magnitude 4.8) and B-Vcolor index 0.66 (temperature 5780K, spectral type G2V). (source:wikipedia.com).

Earth is a pebble
Distance in space is too big
